I was very interested to learn about the perfect suburbian living style found in the 1950's. Levittown did not ring a bell when i first heard the name, i honestly had no idea what it was or the importance of it. After researching i have come to an understanding that levittown is still represetned in many ways in our society today. My house being in Hampton Cove represents a modern day Levittown. I live in the suburbs or otherwise a "suburbia" where it is encouraged that all the houses look the same and their our expectations of the common stereotypes of the inhabitants that live their. As i learned through my research levittown did not just start the suburbian community but formed the stereotype that would start a trend that would continue in american society for years to come.

The begining of advertisment for the new

The very first thing i asked myself, that i am sure you were thinking as well is what is Levittown. I began observing and learning from various sites to get at first a general sense of knowledge of the topic. The first site i discovered was really helpful as its information was from the american hisitory magazine. I thought this website helped provide me with basic information dealing with what was needed to fully understand Levittown. Levittown was established during the baby boom of 1951 in long island. It was a suburban development formed In post WW2 by william Levitt. The Levitt family had already previously built subdivisions following the war for returning veterans and families on the East coast. This American History website let me know that they had already previoulsy built a similar structure of housing before they performed the most well known one in New York. The levitt families first subdivision was in long island in an area known as Roslyn where they had started their success with building 2, 250 homes in 1941. Thats when the family decided they could achieve even more by expanding their idea to appeal to an even greater population after testing and perfecting their technique . I was impressed while researching that the Levitt family didnt just settle but kepy moving forward ultimately leading them to form Levittown.

 The welcome sign entering Levittown

William Levitt was already forming his identity as americas greatest housebuilder during the era. He invisioned an area of land filled with boxlike houses with two bedrooms that would all consist of identical appearances. I wondered by this research how he would fufill his american dream. Levitt and sons found opportunity in New york among the potato fields where they could build their affordable homes for the common people and suceed in their american dream. The federal housing administration at the time was ensuring loans from bankers to builders and farmland in long island would be going cheap, which arose the perfect position for Levitt to start his sucess. The author of this site provided me with authentic information i needed to pursue in my research, drawing me to form more questions and observations. They formed a practical home building style that would keep labor unions at arms length and eliminate local zoning codes, ultimately forming Levittown. Levittown originally island trees gave affordable housing to reunite Gi's and their families. While researching i had a little bit of trouble finding more details about all the land the levitt family bought for their mass construction and their previous identity before that until i discovered the Levittown historical society site providing me with all my answers to my questions. Abraham Levitt was a real estate lawyer but also in investment not only trade. He had no pevious expertise with construction therefor summoned his two sons Albert and William in college for help in forming Levitt and sons where william levit would become president and take over the corporation. Levitt and sons started the idea of a suburbia living style "levittown" to take toll as it spread and appealed to americans across the country.
An aerial view BEFORE the soon to be levittown community is formed in New york

An Aerial picture AFTER the construction of Levittown

William levitt knew that to make his community appeal to americans in advertising he would have to present it as an ideal way of american life, that combined the middle class suburban communities with democratized life of the younger and their families of urban raised gi's. Levittown formed a suburbian community that appealed to thousands of americans. As i was researching i came to the conclusion that Levitt was almost trying to form a utopia living condition hidden within his idea of a community..... which i dont know i find is rather creepy like trying to form robots out of people that would all live and act alike as they were being brainwashed through advertising and what would be expected from them if they lived in such conditins. I discovered through levittownhistoricalsociety.org the explanation behind the attraction americans found to the suburbian community. Sixteen million Gi's were returning and ready to marry, settle down and have a family. However they were came across soem trouble trying to find a place of shelter for their families because as a result from the war their was decreased amount of construction materials needed to build a proper home. Therefor by the end of 1945, people in similar predicaments were living with parents, in cars, tool sheds, attics, basements because over 5 million houses were needed to  reach all these americans goals. Thats when Levitts purchase of cheap farm land on the potato fields and construction of inexpensive mass produced houses were mainly for uniting families and veterans.

a picture of the type of stereotypical life style that was necessary and expected from families living in Levittown

May 7,1947 Levitt and sons built their 2,000 rental homes on the island of trees for veterans. Only two days later the tribune from New York stated that already 1,000 of the houses had already been rented. Based on Levitts construction he built the houses on slabs of concrete and eliminated basements which was prohibitted in Hempstead but because of the vital need for houses it was overlooked. Their production technique was so succesful that they were making thirty houses a day in july, 1948. The demand for houses grew as all 2,000 had been rented so Levitt built 4,000 more, Every community had their own schools, street lights, postal services, it was like they lived in a completely seperated world.   This site is where i found all the previous information as it contained the best research on Levittown because it described every step of the construction process in a very orderly fashion that made it clear to me the point and goals levitt had formed for his plans. By the end in 1951 17,447 houses stood in Levittown. Levitts construction plan was srtategically done and wisely positioned every room for a purpose. The kitchen was purposely put to look over the street where while the mother was doing housework she could watch over her children at play as well as see them while relaxing in the living room. The street was the area of focus for children at play not what we would think is the safest idea but the best way the children could be seen because behind the house in the back yard kids could not be kept an eye on. The price of these houses were under 8,000 dollars.

"It is a poor week when Levitt houses arent feautured in at least one full column story in New York Newspapers" wrote a reporter in 1947 from the Fortune Magazine. Levittown was advertised profuosly through commercials on the radio, tv, magazines articles, it was a topic that was very appealing to everyones. "Levittowns fame has spread so widely, both in america and abroad that it now ranks near the statue of liberty among the seven wonders which New York City visitors want to see" was stated in the Nassau Daily Review Star in 1951. When the last levitt home was bought in 1951 the levitts had the title of being the biggest housing development by one builder ever in america. People had always feared taht since the houses were built so fast and cheap that they would all turn into slums never happened! These quotes and research really prove just how great people saw the idea of levittown for the most part and what a success it had become in the states.

William levitt on the cover of a time magazine in July of 1950

The way Levittown impacted american lifestyles is because it formed a suburbian nation. One third of the population lived in suburbs. William Levitt became a symbol and represtented the new idea of suburban growth due to his techniques in mass production. So many people wanted to move to the suburbs because it was a community with a large population of people with common backgrounds and ages. In these suburbs americans found it easier to make new friends and form social groups. Most suburbs were restricted to whites and though there were a few african american communities very similar it was dominated by whites. Since many african americans could not afford to live in the suburbian like houses of Levittown.  This information is from the American History twelth edition book by Alan Brinkley, pages 800-801..  I hadn't actually used the textbook for research purposes so i thought it was a different way of finding information so much easier! hahahahhahhhahaa wish i would of thought of using it earlier!

                                                                      Levittown

Living in Suburbs has impacted American Lifestyle even today. Though the levitt houses are still there today they have been modified with the new generation, not looking identical as they had before. However levitt began th suburbian culture which is still seen in many places today. Ranging from middle class based suburbs to upper class ones in present day you could find suburbs contained with mixed classes and races.  I wake up every morning in a suburb and i love it. Levittown was just the begining of a new way of living for future generations to come and carry on the same characteristics. My loads of research helped me to understand the importance and the way it affected americans then and now. ON A SIDE NOTE...Thank you Mrs. Lawson for everything you have done, you are such an incerdible teacher and i have enjoyed every day in your class. You make learning fun and interesting, your able to keep the class involved and never dull. For once i enjoyed learning about history and have a better understanding of it than i have from any other history class at Randolph. I hope you have a great summer! ill miss you and cant wait to see you again the start of senior year! I appreaciate everything you have done for me, so thank you again!! <3 <3 <3 :);):);):);):)

Charles Manson!!!!

A Classic picture of Charles Mansons insanity at its best

I was so excited to be able to choose a research topic i was interested in. I have always been obsesed with scary movies, murders, psycho path serial killers, anything dark and corrupted is so appealing to me for some odd reason.Even though i would never personally want to be in such a horrid situation as being a victim of the insane masked murderer, anytime i watch a good scary movie, i love to see how the story unfolds. Ever since i saw chuckie as a child i have stepped up my game and tolerance for unnecessary fear i felt when wathcing such things. Slowly however scary movies blend together until it is the same idea of a killer chasing after innocent people torturing them one by one until they all die. Therefor movies that are a reality to individuals makes me much more interested in learning about the actual events, where the gruessome killings are not edited on screen but happen to people just like us going about their lives. I became fascinated with A massacre that shocked americans in 1945 until this very day that serves as a historical event in American society.....THE. MANSON. MURDERS. The gruessome killing spree handled by none other than the Charles Manson and his "family" or cult as it is referred to. The results of the miscellaneous murders were, 6 slaughtered bodies, "pig" written in blood all of the door, and an uproar as americans tried to process the very thought of it. As i began to discover the truth behind the murder i felt as if i was the detective on Mansons case. I have to say that if these murders shocked and interested someone who lives off of scary movies than what is revealed in this blog is definitely going to knock your socks off. Better than any scary movie ive ever seen, Manson has created quite the tale and name for himself one that will never be forgotton. .Helterrr......SKELTER..... mwhahahahaahaha

Manson during his younger years of "innocence"

Mansons childhood only slightly foreshadowed what would come of his life in the future. Born in  Cincinatti, Ohio in 1934, his mother was a 16 year old prostitute abandoned him at a very young age before his father died. Mansons dad used to dress him up in girls cloths and call him a "wimp" as he made him wear a dress to his first day of school. Still though is no better than Mansons mom trying to sell her own child  for one glass  of beer. At the age of 9 years old Manson was already being publically insitutionalized commited a few rather smaller crimes involving stealing and burglary and such. Manson was said to have had an IQ of 109 by his psychiatrist in one of the public instiutions and said that "Manson would one day become a fairly slick, institutionalized youth" already he was being viewed as a troublemaker. Even"Manson Raped a little boy with a raisor to his throat so automatically was already a jail bird on his path of great success (Sarcasm). This site was very helpful in it gave an overview of the main aspects that should be remmeberd from charles Mansons early life. It helped lead me to an even better website that portrayed different chatcteristics that Manson posessed in his younger years. I discovered that he was quite the ladies man...... Charles Manson was also known as Charles Miles Maddox. After having such good behavior in jail, he was released on parole and got hitched to a waitress which resulted in their son. But poor Manson kept stealing cars so went back to jail where his wife divorced him. But do not fret when he got out he got married again to a women named Leona had a child with her, than was sent back to jail where he soon recieved divorce papers. The next 6 years he spent in prison was during the time he discovered his love of music under the guidance of a befriended inmate named Allvin Karpis who slowly taught him how to play the guitar. Manson thought when he got out of jail he would pursure a musical career..... well we wish uhe would of done that instead of going down such a different path. The information i learned from this site was more than helpful it gave me the exact details i had been looking for.

                                                           Mansons earlier times in jail

As i began to research in greater depth of Charles Manson through the same site as earlier, it led me right to his horrific cult formation and gave me the sense of just how crazy this guy already was. When Manson was released from prison with his guitar and drugs traveled to California where i discovered he began to have a few insane people crazy enough to want to follow in his footsteps and found and sort of rational in his obsurd logic. This information i found on this site proved to be the most interesting to me as it was the last event of failure he had before the final coming together of his family. Manson still wanted his musical career so pursued it by going to teh beach boys with one of his songs that they didnt use in their album until later on after manson went on his killing spree. After his harsh denial and all his dreams being crushed him and his followers move to the Spahn Ranch an old popular place where western movies used to be shot now belonged to

Blood stains found all over the house

The first person to come across the bodies was a maid named Chapman as she walked calmly into the kitchen in absolute shock ran down the street shouting "murder, death, bodies, blood!!" Garretson the caretaker that lives on the same land but a little farther away from the house was taken in by the police for being the only living person on the property. He was arrested even though he said he didn’t hear anything so was eventually released and served many years in therapy after the events. Sharrons husband was in London when he got the call that his wife and unborn child along with 5 others were dead he took a immediate flight to LA
before his trial
The manson murders spread all of the country every american was shocked and soon Manson was identifed as the #1most dangerous man alive. The trial was held

                                                          His Family members

While researching my topic i really wanted to hear about how it effected Americans not as a whole but talk to some individually about living in that period of time. When i brought up the idea of me doing a research paper around murders in the late 40's he immediately suggested the Manson Murders. He made a cringing face even at the name of it and than followed up with the phrase helter skelterr. My dad said the event was horrific and shocking that when

I enjoyed researching this topic

dorothea LAnge

Dorothea Lange, March, 1937

Dorothea Lange was a photographer who captured realistic results of the great depression. She did not try to cover up the truth of how it affected individuals but rather enhanced and exposed the reality. In this photograph she captures it to support the formation of migrant camps for people during the great depression.  She was trying to be the voice of the people that didn't speak up to get the relief they deserved. She made an impact socially through her photos such as this one as organizations began to expose her work. This photo specifically has a dark tone to it, capturing the isolation and living conditions of farmers trying to make a living. The house being run down and rugged looking like a dump, portraying how people were just trying to get by. The photo is isolated, it doesn't need people to convey their emotions it is very obvious just by the appearance the conditions individuals of the great depression were trying to live by.

numnumnumnummm HUNGER STRIKERS!!

My research topic is HUNGER STRIKERS BY SUFFRAGISTS!!! At first i did not know anything about the subject but was very interested to begin researching information right away. Any event that involves a strike and people standing up for what they believe in despite the consequences is very inspirational to me. Therefor now as i learned more about those events they truly display courage i was automatically drawn in. I started with the basics with my researching by finding out what the overall idea was of hunger strikers in world war one. Hunger strikers were individuals or in this case members of the national american woman suffrage that refuse to eat in order to protest for women rights and liberty such as the right to vote. Any time i typed in my topic to Google i got many results of different hunger strikes pursued over the years, so i have been very careful to make sure i look for the time frame of 1904 through 1925.

A comical look of the way people saw american suffragists pursuits/ depicting their rights being hopeless  their idea are dead.

the judgement the women faced from the community

As i researched i began to understand the event that led to the rising point for these women suffragists to begin their drastic way of protesting. The hunger strikes led by the suffragists definitely had an great impact that changed the american society in world war one. The national women party, (NWP) formed in 1913 with 50,000 members, publicly made people aware of the w omens suffrage campaign. Women did not have the right to vote so these parties and organizations like the NWP and NAWSA (National American women Suffrage association) made up of suffragists were determined to change the law. While learning about the different suffragists groups i got a little confused in all of the different groups that branched off of each other but all involving women suffragists. The National women party was the main one involved in carrying out  hunger strikes and  were willing to risk everything they had for arrest. However before learning about the details of the actual hunger strike the first thing that came up every time repetitively throughout my research process  was a women by the name of Alice Paul.

suffragists dedication to have the right to vote and be treated the same

                                                           The National women party protesting

a drawn picture from "the Suffragette" newspaper

When learning about Alice Paul its obvious that she was such a role model for women than and i think even now! Alice Paul was an activist who led the nationals women party in trying various ways to gain the presidents attention like holding signs at the gate of the white house that simply asked "Mr.President, How long must women wait for liberty." I get so excited when i find actual statements and actions these suffragists carried out it really helps me not only visualize but makes it so much more realistic. However under Alice Paul and her persistence in picketing in front of the white house resulted in president wilson feeling embaressed and taunted by the women. Wilson sent police who began arresting the suffragists and placing them in jail for longer sentences as they kept picketing. Alice Paul was arrested and sentenced for seven months in prison where she was barely fed at all to the point she become so weak she was taken to the hospital. From that point Alice Paul began the hunger strike. Her determination was almost unreal all these doctors threatened to put her in asylums and wards because she refused to eat but she didn't budge. She stood up for what she believed in.... In my opinion that is truly admirable. Doctors afraid she was on the verge of death stuffed a tube down her throat and forcibly poured different liquid into her stomach for three weeks. Alice Paul STILL DIDNT GIVE UP, despite the illness and excruciating pain that went along with force feeding she didn't end the hunger strike. Alice led a inspirational campaign that resulted in the success of women voting.

The lovely Alice Paul

women suffragists picketing in front of the white house

Similar to Alice's treatment in jail in response to pursuing the hunger strike doctors used awful techniques of physical force to make these women eat. This forceful feeding used to stop the womens pursuits did not stop these suffragists from continuing their strike. Women would be tied down to a chair or held down by many doctors in order to feed them through a tube against their will. Some women would be force fed over 200 times, the process always lasted for long periods of time. A high death risk sometimes occured when the tube used  to transfer the liquid food to the women were shoved so far down the womens throat it would enter the windpipe and cause food to enter the lungs. .Many women suffragists died even after getting out of jail as a result of the conditions that were preformed on the prisoners. When news got out about the awful conditions of the treatment for suffragists in jail may Americans were incredibly angry and formed more support for the suffragists. The inappropriate ways of feeding against an individuals will shocked everyone and actually helped in drawing more attention to the suffragists, any support they could get made a difference overall benefiting them.

the cruel treatment of the suffragists in jail, the public knew it was wrong

Still some public tension against what suffragists were doing, making a serious matter comical

Famous picture depicting to public about treatment of women in prison

All of the hard work women suffragists had comitted themselves to would result in success and laws being changed in their favor. President Woodrow Wilson were successfully pressured by the women suffragists to give women throughout the nation the right to vote. The final result being in the NWP(National Womens Party) and NAWSA(National American Women Suffrage Association) when 2/3 vote from senate and house formed the 19th amendment as a part of the united states constitution stating in exact words: "The right of citizens of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex." I was so excited when i found these exact words from the constitution on the Britannica public library site, it really clearly states the exact rights suffragists desired to reach their goal and they did it! I cant help but feel exhilarated when learning how so much effort and time is needed to make a change and just how big of a difference it makes. These brave women from these organizations that did hunger strikes, physically harming themselves to show their dedication and commitment resulted in their goals being succeeded. Without there impact us women today in 2012 would not be able to vote. So if i could go back in time i would congratulate and commemorate every suffragist that helped make something as common today as voting happen. Then i would feed them all lovely celebratory cake and have a grand feast for them!!!!!

a picture of papers supporting women voting

The constitution officially stating women had the right to vote (19th amendment)

I LOVED learning about this subject it was exactly what i had wanted to learn about and hope to have similar topics in the near future. The whole event was so inspirational and really proves that hard work pays off and to never give up. The suffragists at the time knew they were doing something bigger than themselves and an strike that would change history forever! what was so amazing was the strength and will power of the women, i cannot see men at the time being so set on something to physically starve themselves. The hunger strike pursuits by suffragists determination truly changed american society forever.

FaCeS Of WaR / creepy yet incredible

I had no idea about the faces of war and watching this video opened my eyes and had me so interested to learn more about it. Its an absolute genius idea but at the same time really creepy. Its wonderful that they were able to help soldiers whose face had become disfigured due to the war have a mask made or several facial parts created to help restore their faces. As i watched this video reveal actual footage from the event  i began to want to learn more about this subject so i read the article as well and looked through many photos. the plastic surgeons who helped individuals with facial reconstruction tried to match a soldiers face as best as he could as how he looked before the war, which required tremendous amounts of time and effort. These masks for the facial disfigured help build soldiers confidence and restore their hope they had once had without feeling their self esteem lowered by their appearance. It was also known as the tin noses shop. Honestly though it interested me so much because i know that if i saw a man with is nose chopped off or his mouth deformed i would stare like many others would so the fact that this medical group from the hospital was able to help men not be so judged and looked at for who they were instead of what they looked like made all the difference to these men. Just throwing it out there but It does kind of remind me of some scary movies i have seen where the killers have deformed faces so at the same time its great for these soldiers of war its rather creepy looking at these men,

knowledge of a great white fleet

Under Roosevelt 14,000 men took control of white ships that traveled around the world, on december 16, 1907 they held the aircraft carrier with Roughhead the chief of naval operatoins and Winter a navy secretary. The traveling of the fleets formed a navy tradition of disaster relief to the needy countries. Overall the fleet visited six different continents like italy, australia, japan. The great white fleet was a navy battle fleet that was able to travel around the globe, directed by Theodore Roosevelt himself. It was overall a fourteenth month trip showing Americas sea power.
